Employing more than 15,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With its 11 faculties and more than 80 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.YOUR TASKS

  • Conduct research on novel quantum critical behaviors that go beyond conventional phase transition mechanisms, particularly using tensor network states from the viewpoint of entanglement and symmetry.
  • Focus on understanding symmetry-enriched quantum critical points by integrating tensor network methods with conformal field theory techniques.
  • Collaborate with group members, participate in discussions, and contribute to publications in high-impact journals.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • The quantum group at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Ghent University is seeking a motivated postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in condensed matter theory. The successful candidate will work on understanding novel symmetry-enriched quantum critical points by combining tensor networks and the conformal field theory techniques.
  • An applicant must hold a Ph.D. in theoretical physics with expertise in condensed matter theory. Demonstrated research productivity, a strong publication record, and excellent collaboration skills are mandatory.
  • Applicants should have research experience in both quantum phase transitions and tensor network states. Strong analytical research skills including conventional perturbative renormalization group and conformal field theory are required for the position. The applicants should also have strong background in tensor network states (Matrix Product States and Projected Entangled Pair States), especially finite entanglement scaling study of critical quantum spin chains.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a contract of definite duration for the period of 3 months.
  • Your contract will start on 20/12/2024 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale WM1 to WM4 (if you hold a Master’s degree) or salary scale PD1 to PD4 (if you hold a doctorate). Click here for more information about our salary scales.
  • All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full-time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance and eco vouchers.
