To support our future innovation journey at and to ensure that we build the right foundation for our future solutions, we are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join a team developing mechanical platforms and modules in Mechanics, R&D at FOSS.The department & the platform teamThe Mechanics team is currently consisting of 23 mechanical engineers, technicians, technical assistants, and engineering students. We work in multifunctional projects across the organization to design, develop and document innovative, robust, and world-class mechanical & electro-mechanical solutions. Most of the team take part in one of our ongoing instrument development projects together with other highly skilled professionals from various functions. We have recently initiated a sub-team to optimize the way we work with front-end mechanics and hereby strengthen the mechanical foundation for our future solutions. This team is responsible for defining and developing mechanical architectures, platforms and modules for our expanding solution roadmap. The work is coordinated in close collaboration with key stakeholders across the organization, such as Technology, Marketing & Front-End Innovation, UI/UX and Business Development and continuously anchored in FOSS’ future solution roadmap and strategy. The team help to ensure that we think ahead and lay the foundation by designing future mechanical architectures, platforms, and modules which are rooted in future customer requirements, the latest analytical technologies and business opportunities. To ensure a successful integration into the specific instrument project and to continuously optimize the process, the team take part in the first design phases and continues to support when it comes to the platform and module design used in the project.The workday you can look forward toWe are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer who has solid experience in working with mechanical design and mechanical platform development – both on a conceptual and practical level. Together with the rest of the team, you will play a key role in setting direction for the mechanical platform architectures and the development of modules to be utilized across our future instruments. The team collaborate with colleagues across the organization to ensure that the user needs and the high-level requirements are accounted for in the mechanical architecture, platform and modules being developed. The role requires that you are person that finds it easy to approach people, to listen and understand the various perspectives, and be able to consolidate and structure data to a format that is clear and understandable. We are currently on a journey to strengthen the platform thinking and way of working, and you will have a great opportunity to use your skills in helping us to be successful on this mission. The role will give you opportunities for both personal and professional development and your work will help us to be on the forefront when it comes to the design and functionality of our future instruments and solutions.Your daily work will be at the FOSS Innovation Centre in Hillerød, Denmark, with 5-10 traveling days per year primarily to our Hungary site, to manufacturing/supplier sites or to customers.What will make you fit wellYou are used to take ownership and a high degree of responsibility for mechanical product development, and you are highly skilled when it comes to both theoretical and hands-on tasks. You have a well-developed, conceptual approach to challenges, and you like to work with multiple design scenarios to find the best solution. You thrive in the early phases of a design process, where there is a high degree of uncertainty, and you have a positive mindset even when you are challenged and face tight deadlines. You are familiar in working in a regulated business (food, medical, etc.) and can incorporate external requirements and standards as a natural part of the concepting and design process. You have an approachable and outgoing personality, you like to share your work with others, and you enjoy discussing with others to reach the optimal solution. People respect you and like to work with you because of your strong professional competencies and personal qualities. You have well-developed communication skills and are used to communicate complex ideas and concepts in a concise manner. You master the art of simplicity, and you promote continuous improvement in design solutions and in ways of working.You hold a degree in mechanical engineering, you are fluent in English and Danish and have minimum 10 years working experience within many of the following areas:
- Mechanical architecture, platform and modular concepting and development.
- Prototyping techniques and additive manufacturing methods.
- User interaction design and human-factor engineering
- Mechanical detailed design of plastic and metal components for products that also include electronics and electro-mechanics.
- 3D/2D CAD design (we use Autodesk Inventor).
- Material selection and qualification (metals, glass, thermoplastics and elastomers)
- Production, service and manufacturing process understanding (DfA, DfM, DfS).
- Structured problem-solving methods.
- Designing of robust mechanical solutions (tolerance calculations and robust design principles).
