Benthic ecology of the Danish Wadden SeaResearch area and project description:
We are excited to offer a unique PhD opportunity dedicated to advancing knowledge of how climate change impacts the Wadden Sea in Denmark. The candidate will work within a larger research project, with other research teams working on sediment dynamics and seabird ecology as well. The overall goal of the project is to improve knowledge of how climate change is expected to impact food availability for migrating birds.For the benthic PhD study, the candidate is expected to analyse existing time series data on benthic biomass on intertidal flats, conduct field surveys of the seasonal population dynamics of key species and finally perform controlled lab experiments quantifying effects of key climatic drivers on benthic species. Finally, the candidate is expected to contribute actively to interdisciplinary discussions and outreach in the project.Project description (½-4 pages)

The Candidate must have a relevant Bachelor’s degree in biology or related fields. The duration of the PhD program will depend on the educational background of the chosen candidate. The candidate must have demonstrated experience with conducting ecological experiments in the lab as well as conducting field surveys on intertidal mud flats.The candidate must be familiar with programming and data analysis in at least one programming language. The candidate is expected to have good written and spoken EnglishThe candidate must be keen on collaborating with a team of international colleagues.
Additionally, it is beneficial that the candidate has any of the following experience:

  • Drivers license
  • Outreach experience
  • Taxonomic knowledge of benthic species in the Wadden Sea
  • Writing and publishing scientific papers
