The Cavendish Laboratory (Department of Physics) has a rare opportunity for a new dynamic and highly skilled Head of Electronics to join our passionate and dedicated community. The roleholder will lead the strategic development and transformation of the Department’s electronics services to enhance the Cavendish’s continued growth and success. The department’s electronics workshop operates a wide-ranging support service whose remit includes analogue, digital and RF design and manufacturing, PCB design and manufacturing, electrical/electronic system integration and remanufacturing, as well as automation and control of laboratory systems. The electronics workshop is also responsible for supporting a wide range of departmental equipment, including within individual laboratories and involving minor repairs when appropriate and viable. As well as working closely with research groups on specific projects, the workshop also offers training in basic electronics, consultation and one-to-one support (e.g. in PCB design) and general electronics based problem solving.The Cavendish Laboratory is at an exciting point in its 150-year history, and undergoing a substantial period of transformation, as it prepares for its relocation to a beautiful, purpose-built physics facility, the Ray Dolby Centre, which will be the centre-piece of the new Cavendish III Laboratory. The Department is home to over 2000 staff, students and visitors across a large range of disciplines and categories, where exemplary delivery of world-leading, innovative research programmes and teaching takes place and where the provision of local electronics support continues to be vital to our physics research activity.The successful candidate will be a strong and forward looking technical manager with extensive understanding of the modern field of electronics to manage, reinvigorate and enhance the provision of electronics support in the department including planning finances and managing outsourcing/sharing resources with other departments. You will have a clear commitment to service delivery with strong leadership and management skills and solid experience as a team builder with excellent interpersonal skills. You will engage proactively with the department and be keen to support the wider goals of teaching and research.As a senior member of the Department, you will work closely with the Head of Cavendish Estates to ensure the Department’s approach to the electronics provision is both collaborative and innovative. You will lead, and work operationally with, the dedicated electronics team to ensure the smooth and efficient running of all electronics services within the Department.This full-time post is available now.
