Job description

Offer DescriptionOur present-day scientific lexicon, replete with Greek and Latin neologisms, offers readily recognizable and lucid building blocks of international communication. However, in antiquity, the distinction between common language and specialized vocabulary was significantly blurred, lacking today’s overtly distinct terminology. The project “The consistency of scientific and scholarly discourse in the ancient world: computational approaches to terminology and formulas in Ancient Greek and Latin technical texts” (3840220) aims to change our understanding of the use and comprehension of terminology within classical literature by pioneering novel methods of analysis. By leveraging corpus-driven research and Natural Language Processing (NLP), the project seeks to provide comprehensive insights into the dynamics of terminological use in the scientific and scholarly discourse of the ancient world, with special attention given to its consistency. The PhD student will closely collaborate with the team, in particular with the postdoctoral scholar (co-applicant of the project). The PhD project will investigate the consistency of terminology in one or multiple scientific domains (including mathematics) in both Greek and Latin texts, based on data that is manually annotated by the PhD student as well as automatically predicted results, using a corpus-linguistic methodology. The student will also investigate the degree of formulaicity of scientific texts, exploring automatic methods to identify and extract formulae.Where to apply WebsiteRequirementsResearch Field Language sciences Education Level Master Degree or equivalentLanguages LATIN Level ExcellentLanguages ANCIENT GREEK Level ExcellentAdditional InformationBenefitsA full-time, 4-year PhD position.
