Job description

A Specialist Further Education College for young adults aged 19-25 years with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, are seeking a Kitchen Cook on a Full-Time basis.

  • Provide a healthy, balanced, nutritional menu for our students and staff to purchase on a daily basis, taking into account budget constraints for those students on free school meals.
  • Prepare food that effectively caters for the complex dietary needs of our students and also addresses their preferences for certain types of food prepared in specific ways.
  • You will be responsible for the preparation, cooking and serving of meals together with the planning and control of all aspects of the service.
  • You will direct the ‘General Assistants’ and Lunchtime Supervisors to ensure the students receive the correct food and that they operate in the kitchen and dining area safely and according to college policy.
  • The college has a Training Kitchen where students learn basic cooking skills, you will be responsible for the ordering of food required to operate the kitchen for training purposes.
  • To enable you to undertake this work successfully, you will be expected to attend Continual Professional Development sessions to further your knowledge of the needs of our students in a range of areas such.
  • You will need to be able to follow student care plans.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESTo manage and control the general kitchen organisation through

  • Creating menus that meet nutritional guidelines and cater to dietary needs.
  • Cooking meals from scratch, or using pre-prepared ingredients, and in bulk.
  • Monitoring inventory and placing orders for ingredients.
  • Adhering to strict food safety regulations.
  • Maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen.
  • Collaborating with other staff members.
  • Working within a designated budget for food supplies.
  • Catering for special events or functions within the school.
  • Minimising food waste.
  • Gathering feedback regarding the meals served and making necessary adjustments.
  • Potentially overseeing a team of kitchen assistants.
  • Participating in professional development opportunities to enhance culinary skills.
  • Staying updated on food safety regulations.

Maintaining the College Kitchens

  • To monitor stock rotation and stock control and place orders of ingredients, consumables and bulk orders where appropriate.
  • To maintain a safe working environment, ensuring all equipment is safe to use and well maintained.
  • To maintain cleanliness of the kitchens, ovens, fridges, appliances and equipment to a very high standard and manage the process of regular deep cleans as required.
  • To assist in the organisation and presentation of the kitchens and food storage areas.
  • To ensure that health and safety regulations are met, including checking equipment for safety, cleaning and sterilizing equipment.
  • To maintain inventories to ensure that all equipment is accounted for, in the correct place, and replaced where necessary.

Qualifications + Training

  • Hold a NVQ 2/3 Level 3 or above in catering or similar experience.
  • Level 3 food hygiene certificate.

Experience

  • Excellent knowledge of large-scale catering and cooking
  • Ability to prepare, cook and present food
  • Ability to provide dietary and culturally acceptable food

Expected salary

£100 – 120 per day
