PhD candidate (f/m/d) in Acoustofluidics

The position is available from October 1st, 2024 and is initially limited to a period of 3 years.

An extension will be sought if suitable.

The Leibniz-IPHT is a university independent research institute with close connection to the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena and member of the Leibniz association.

Job description:

The Microfluidics Research Group (https://www.leibniz-ipht.de/en/departments/nanobiophotonics/work-groups/microfluidics/) of the Leibniz-IPHT is developing microfluidic devices and technologies to support the development of new spectroscopic and image-based techniques in biomedical research and particle analytics. The offered position will be part of the research activities in the field of advanced imaging flow cytometry and is dedicated to the alignment of particles to the focal plane of an optical detection system. In this context, the position of a doctoral candidate is to be filled for the development of acoustofluidic techniques for particle manipulation in microfluidic devices.

Your field of activity includes:

– Design, implementation and comprehensive characterization of acoustofluidic devices
– Research and implementation of the infrastructure for measuring the characteristics of particle displacement under acoustic fields in 2D/3D
– Application of Comsol-Multiphysics for numerical simulations and derivation of mathematical models for particle interaction with resonant ultrasonic fields and prediction of particle trajectories in microfluidic devices
– Characterization and measurement of ultrasonic properties of chip materials and fluids, used in the experiment
– The doctorate is planned as a cumulative PhD project with 3 peer-reviewed publications in highly approved scientific journals

Your qualification:

– A completed university degree (Diploma/Master) of the Natural- or Engineering sciences
– Good command of written and spoken English and German

Desired knowledge and skills:

– Knowledge of data processing and experimental design
– Experiences in lab-work in chemical and biological laboratories
– Willingness and interest in interdisciplinary scientific work
– Willingness to take on teaching tasks in the context of supervising internships and courses
– Experiences in object-oriented programming
